Jamal Wallace (Brown) is a normal Bronx kid, playing basketball and just doing enough to get by at school, but his love is writing. After breaking into the local urban legend's den of horrors as part of a dare, he discovers the proprietor of the abode is famous author William Forrester (Connery), who has become somewhat of a recluse. When Jamal's SAT scores come back extremely high he is offered a scholarship to a prodigious Manhattan School, Forrester tries to bring out the potential he has in his writing and Jamal tries to bring his mentor back into the world.
This movie is like a breath of fresh air. Adding to the breeze started at the beginning of the year by the likes of Almost Famous, Hannibal and Traffic. Outstanding performances from the always-excellent Connery and newcomer Brown draw you into this tale of friendship and personal growth. Director Gus Van Sant again captures the destitute feel of the run down inner city projects as he did in Good Will Hunting without letting the scenery over shadow the central story line. So what we have here is an uplifting, charming movie that will fill you with the feeling of contentment that you get when you know you've seen a really good film.
