BASICS - PART
1
Voyager is taken over by the Kazon-Nistrum, and the crew are dumped on a
planet in its early stages of evolution.
The fourth live action Star Trek TV series blasts into its second season and produces some of its most memoriable episodes.
While some may argue that the series didn't really get into its stride until the introduction of the Borg, season two is filled with character defining single episodes that explore the crew members better than at any other time.
Harry Kim is considered one of the most uninteresting characters to ever inhabit the Star Trek universe but in Non Sequitur Garret Wang actually receives an excellent Sci-Fi script to produce the best episode for his character. Kes actually starts to become interesting and moves on to a new level in Cold Fires. Already an interesting character but the Doctor begins to grow in Lifesigns and finds love for the first time. B'Elanna starts to show her qualities in engineering and Tuvok wrestles with emotion in Meld
. As well as the character-based episodes you have shows that also advance the series. The multi-episode Seska-Chakotay story was a first for the Star Trek franchise and pushed the to new heights. The re-introduction of Q was seen by many as a way of boosting ratings but his many appearances became a story arc of its own. Yes there are some stinkers in there like Threshold, Twisted and Persistence of Vision but throw in episodes like Tuvix, Deadlock and The 37s and you have the makings of one of Voyager's best seasons.
Star Trek Voyager's second season really starts the ball rolling as the crew come to terms with their predictament. From now one the series comes into its own by realising its unique identity, giving it the ability to tell some classic science fiction stories.
PICTURE & SOUND
Presented in full frame 4:3 with a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound track, the transfer is very good. The picture quality is extremely sharp with the slightly improved special effects budget making everything look great. The sound quality is very good however with strong emphasis on dialogue and the surround sound is getting better as you can hear the sound of the engines all around you.

OVERALL
Paramount has produced another exceptionally packaged Star Trek Voyager season on DVD for every Trekker to enjoy. The quality of the special features is first rate and very informative. An episode commentary track here and there wouldn't have gone a miss and it is still a tad expensive (shop around) but this aside, this is still an exceptional season box set that sets a very high standard.
